Do you say, "headphones," or "earphones"?

I'm always saying headphones or headset, but when I do my students look at me cross. They insist it's earphones. I thought earphones are the kind that go directly inside the ear. And those I usually call ear buds... So what's what?

I'll say earphones if they go inside the ear, and headphones or headset if the have that thingie across your head.. Students think they're sooo smart sometimes... they always find a way to make you feel old or stupid :)

I lost my earbuds. Haven't been able to listen to podcasts at work all day. :(

I lost my mp3 player 3 months ago. I know the player is somewhere in this house but can't find it. I should go through every room and box. Eventually, I never find it. Have to live the rest of my life without a player i bought from Bologna, Italy. It's a pity.

Fortunately I can still play mine in the car!

I'll perhaps stop and buy new ones on my way home tonight.
